About HypnoBirthing

What is HypnoBirthing?

HypnoBirthing is a complete childbirth education program that teaches you to use natural relaxation, breathing, self-hypnosis, and positive visualization to create a calm, empowering birth. Rather than approaching birth with fear, HypnoBirthing helps you trust your body's natural ability to give birth comfortably and confidently.

Is HypnoBirthing the same as being hypnotized?

No — it uses self-hypnosis, which is really just a deep state of focused relaxation, similar to meditation. You're always in complete control, fully aware of what's happening, and able to make decisions at any time.

How does It work?

HypnoBirthing breaks the fear-tension-pain cycle. When you're relaxed, your body produces endorphins — its own natural pain relief. When you're fearful or tense, stress hormones cause muscles to tighten, which can slow labor and increase discomfort. The techniques you learn work with your body rather than against it.

Does HypnoBirthing promise a pain‑free birth?

It doesn't make promises about pain, because every birth is different. What it does promise is effective tools to work with your body, stay calm and focused, manage sensations more comfortably, and feel confident and empowered throughout.

What if I'm anxious or scared about giving birth?

You're in exactly the right place. Birth anxiety is incredibly common, and HypnoBirthing was specifically designed to address fear through education, practical tools, and practice. Many of the most anxious students have the most positive births.

What you'll learn

What techniques are covered?

You'll learn several breathing patterns for different stages of labor, visualization practices to keep you calm and focused, and self-hypnosis tools that help your body work efficiently. These aren't abstract concepts — they're practical skills you practice until they feel completely natural.

What role does my partner play?

Your birth partner becomes your comfort coach, breathing guide, and advocate. They'll learn specific support techniques and how to communicate with care providers on your behalf. Many partners say HypnoBirthing transforms them from feeling helpless to feeling genuinely empowered.

My partner is skeptical. Will this work for us?

Skeptical partners are completely normal — and often become the biggest converts. What changes their minds is understanding the science, learning concrete skills, and having a real role to play. Skeptics are very welcome.

Your Birth
Can I use HypnoBirthing in a hospital, or with an epidural, or if I need a cesarean?Yes to all three. The techniques work beautifully in any birth setting. Many families use them to stay calm during early labor before an epidural, and they're especially valuable for managing pre-surgery anxiety and supporting recovery after a cesarean. The skills are yours to use however your birth unfolds.
What are the benefits?

Families commonly report shorter labors, reduced need for interventions, better oxygen flow to baby, faster postpartum recovery, and a greater sense of control and confidence. Every birth is unique — but HypnoBirthing consistently helps it feel more manageable.

The Classes
Who teaches these classes?

I'm Tammy Cleland, a Certified HypnoBirthing International Educator based in San Rafael. I discovered HypnoBirthing while preparing for my own birth, and the experience was so transformative that after a long career in tech, I became certified to teach it. My approach is evidence-based, warm, and supportive of all birth choices.

When should I start?

The ideal time is between 20 and 32 weeks — enough time to learn and practice thoroughly. That said, it's never too late, and many families have started successfully in their third trimester.

What's included?

Five 2.5-hour classes (12 hours total), professional relaxation audio recordings, the HypnoBirthing book by Marie Mongan, handouts and visual aids, and guidance from an educator who used these techniques herself.

How much practice is required?

Even 10–15 minutes a day makes a meaningful difference. The good news: practice feels good. Daily relaxation, a few breathing sessions per week, and weekly partner practice is all it takes.

Do you offer private classes?

Yes. Private sessions are available for families who prefer one-on-one instruction, a flexible schedule, or more focused attention on specific concerns.

Practical Details
Can I use HSA/FSA or insurance?

Yes — HypnoBirthing classes are HSA/FSA eligible. You can use your card directly at checkout or pay out of pocket and submit for reimbursement. Some insurance plans offer reimbursement for childbirth education (CPT code S9436, diagnosis code Z32.2). You can check with your provider using terms like “childbirth education” or “prenatal classes.” Upon completion, I provide a formal letter with everything your insurer needs.

Where are classes held?

In-person sessions are held in downtown San Rafael at Evergreen Wellness Collective. Zoom options are available for families who prefer remote learning or live outside the area.

Can I take HypnoBirthing if this isn't my first baby?

Absolutely — many experienced parents take HypnoBirthing because their previous birth was difficult, or they simply want a different experience this time.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. I'm happy to schedule a brief call to answer your questions, talk through whether the program is right for you, and address any concerns. Click Here to Book.
